As I've been jealously reading all the great savings people have got at CVS and walgreens, I decided to give it a shot. While we don't have CVS in Utah yet, I figured Walgreens was simple enough to try it out. So how did I do???
I saved $46.49 between 2 transactions on advertised savings and coupons(before and after my dogs vet appointment since it's half a block away), I will be recieving $63.28 in rebates (already submitted for them!), which gave me a total out of pocket expense after recieving the rebates to a mere $12.60. Not bad, huh? Granted I would've made money on all of this except I needed a few things that were not free after rebate and a few deals that I thought were good for me so I took advantage of them.
So here's my rundown...
Transaction #1 (July/August rebates)
~Glade Candle - Orig. $5.99, used $1 walgreens coupon, had $2 rebate... total = $1.99
~Jane mineral powder - Orig. $5.99, on sale for $4.99, had $4.99 rebate... total = free!
~Pert Plus - Orig. $3.79, rebate for up to $3.99... total = free
~Bio Shampoo - Orig. $7.99, on sale for $5.99, $5.99 rebate... total = free
~ Large vacuum storage bag - Orig. $5.99, $5.99 rebate... total = free
~Pantene expressions shampoo (2) - Orig. $5.99 each, bogo rebate... total = $5.99 for 2
~Soft White Bulbs pack of 4 - orig. $1.99, $1.99 rebate... total = free
~ Glade plug in refills -on sale for $4.49, $1 walgreens coupon, $1 rebate... total = $2.49
Also, total was over $40, used $10 off $40 purchase coupon from website
Grand total Out of Pocket came to $2.86 with tax (once I get all the rebates back obviously)
Transaction #2 (August/September Rebates)
~ Chemistry Shampoo - Orig. $7.99, $3 walgreens August Coupon, $7.99 rebate... total = -$3
(they paid me... what can get better than that???)
~ Scotch shipping envelopes - Orig. ??, on sale for $0.99 ... total = $2.97 for 3
~Angelsoft toilet paper - Orig. $7.79 for 12 double rolls, $4.99 for 1 walgreens coupon limit 2... total = $9.98 for 2
~3m packing tape - Orig. $3.19, BOGO for $2.99 walgreens coupon... total = $2.99 for 2
~ Nivea Men's body wash - Orig. $4.99, $4.99 rebate... total = Free
~ Revlon Nailpolish - Orig. $4.79, $4.79 rebate... total = Free
~ Crest Pro-health toothpaste - Orig. $3.79, $3.79 rebate... total = Free
~ Lypmoisturizer - Orig. $2.99, Sale for $1.99, $1.99 rebate... total = Free
~ Walgreens Acid Control - Orig. $7.99, $7.99 rebate... total = Free
~ Edge Advanced Shave Gel - Orig. $2.49, $1.99 each walgreens coupon... total = $3.98 for 2
$10 off of $40 purchase coupon from website
Grand Total Out of Pocket after rebates = $9.74
Not bad, if I say so myself. Obviously I could've got my total out of pocket to be lower in a few ways... One, to stay over the $40 limit to use the $10, there were a few other free with rebate items that I could've used instead. They had them in stock but while I could've profited a buck off of one of them, I just don't have any desire to get something that I don't need or want for that matter. I'm not really up for using ebay to sale the items either. Everything on my list will be used in my household. Second, several of the items were things that I needed anyhow so since they were a good price, I opted to go ahead and buy them. For instance, I needed shipping envelopes for books sales, packing tape for the same reason. And while I didn't NEED shampoo or any of the other things, it's not like it goes bad so I'm up for those kinds of things anytime!
Have any of you tried the walgreens/CVS/grocery game deals? Just wondering... I haven't gotten into couponing (mainly because we don't buy the paper), but I'd be interested to hear from those of you that have.

Baby carrots... the truth
Ok, since I seem to be getting the most hits from a post I did months ago on baby carrots, I figured people are obviously really trying to find this information so I thought I'd go ahead and post where they come from. Here is what Grimmway Farms has about them...
"Mini-peeled carrots, or baby-cut carrots, were first introduced in 1989. Contrary to popular belief, baby carrots are not grown bite-sized. They are bred to be long and slender, and then cut into two-inch pieces and lathed to uniform width. Today they are the most popular "variety" of carrots in the marketplace!"
I hope this helps those of you researching this, and now that you have found your answer, I hope you stay awhile!

$195.71
That's how much I've made thus far on old textbooks. That's right, I caved and started selling the books that are doing nothing but taking up space and collecting dust. I figured that since I clearly wasn't using them, maybe someone else could. I've been surprised so far by what has sold and am quite happy. Of course I"m not selling all of my books since some will be useful later on, but I'm not particular fond of certain books so if someone else wants to buy it, I'm all for it. For now, I still have about a 3' stack between D's and my books that still are waiting for new homes. Hopefully I can make at least another $200 on them!

Entertainment Book
I remember when I was in elementry and middle school how we were all given the forms to go sell the entertainment books. I remember it probably the best out of all the fund raisers I had to do because I've never had so many people tell me no before! The things were expensive and while Las Vegas had a lot of descent coupons in the book, none were really all that valuable to locals. I know this because my mom wouldn't even by the book after the first 2 years of having to sell them! Anyways, I was surprised recently because as we were looking at things to do while in Hawaii, all the websites we went on kept recommending to get the E-book. So many in fact that I gave in and purchased it. Believe it or not, they were right. This is not the same entertainment book that I had to sell before. You get access to a website full of deals and different rate codes to get better discounts. The book cost $35 (we got free shipping), but we've already got that money back just from our car rental... and we have a lot more plans for the book (like the luau we plan to go to, horseback riding, parasailing and going onto the U.S.S. Missouri Battleship while we're visiting pearl harbor). I'm honestly really shocked and what we've discovered the book has in it without even having recieved it yet. Anyone else have any experiences using the entertainment book when traveling?
Working out = gaining weight???
Did you know that when you work out that you could potentially gain weight? I'm not talking about the whole muscle is heavier than fat deal, I knew that already. Of course the weight gain I'm talking about isn't permanent either but I seriously had no idea. Evidently if you have worked out recently, are sore in those areas, and are experiencing weight gain, it is because your muscles are swollen and retaining water. Supposedly you can gain up to 3 to 4 lbs in this process. And here I was getting upset that I've taken up working out a min. of 2 times a week (2 times a week that kick my butt!) and seeing weight gain. Luckily it has gone back to normal, but I'm still surprised I never knew that happened before. Guess it goes to prove that you should worry about inches and not weight that you're losing, huh?
On another good note.... I've been doing better about cutting back the soda. I'm determined to get better in shape before our trip to Hawaii which is now less than (barely) 9 months away!

Tuition Scare
This morning I logged into my university account to print a copy of my school schedule for my work. In the process I decided I had better check out my tuition statement and see when exactly it is due so that I pay it in time. Now, the past 2 semesters I've been at about $2300 per semester at 12 credits. This next semester (which starts monday), I have 12.5 credits so I was expecting to see a slight increase in my tuition from the lab fees since I am taking more classes. Imagine my surprise when I logged in and saw a $2500+ bill.. yikes! Looking into it further, a$200 fee was added to my statement 12 days after the original billing statement... the reason? Nursing web fee. Say what? I am not a nursing student! I asked a coworker if he had ever heard of it and in turn he said no and that I should tell them if I have to pay $200 more, they can give me a nursing degree too! I then decided I should call my school up and see what was going on. After listening through the voice recordings and finally getting someone on the line (keep in mind, they had been open for only half an hour), I give the lady my student ID number when I told her I had a question about my statement and before she could pull it up she asked if it was about the nursing web fee. Evidently I was not the first to catch it and they had been getting phone call after phone call about it already. She suggested I call back later when they knew what exactly was going on (she didn't know what it was or why it was showing up on so many peoples statements!) or to wait until tomorrow to see if it was taken off. Luckily, it was gone by the time I checked it again about 20 minutes ago. Whew! Tuition is expensive enough without that $200 fee!
"He only came with a ladder"
A friend of mine got into a discussion this past weekend about husbands and tools. Apparently, I was not the only one surprised to find out that my fiance (now husband) had no tools in his possession. Luckily, with the combination of my father's generous purchases, a few purchases we had made, and a gift of a drill from our builder, we quickly obtained the necessary tools for everything around the house. However, our friends have a ways to go. As we were discussing the tools that our husbands have (or lack there of), she blurted out that he only came with a ladder, she came with a hammer and measuring tape (with the appropriate pink flowers on them both). We have now determined that he is really a roofer in his free time since that's the only reason we can think he has only a ladder!

Irresistable
There is something totally irresistable about a 16 month baby using sign language... particularly if this baby is chubby with 2 dimbles. My sister is in town with her baby who has been taught several signs in daycare, such as "please" and "more". Adorable, I tell ya!

Judge Not
Judge Not The Blessings
An excerpt from
by Kate Nowak
Then one evening while she was working late to finish up a quarterly report, Jackie felt suddenly sick to her stomach and was on her way to the restroom when she collapsed in the hall. The next thing she knew she was being placed on a gurney and wheeled out to a waiting ambulance. In the sea of faces hovering over her, the only one she recognized was Nancy's, and in the blur of activity, she could feel Nancy squeeze her hand and hear her say, "Don't worry, Jackie, I'm here. I won't leave you."
It was a promise Nancy kept. Over the next few days as Jackie, a newly divorced mother of two, lay in a hospital bed, coming to terms with the damage done by the stroke she had suffered. Nancy not only stopped by to see her two and three times a day, offering never-ending words of encouragement and bringing mail and get-well messages from co-workers, but also stepped in to see that Jackie's two daughters were cared for and that every aspect of Jackie's life was kept running as smoothly as possible in her absence.
When it was necessary for Jackie to leave the hospital and be placed in a rehabilitation facility, Nancy again made all of the arrangements and visited daily, and when Jackie was finally allowed to go home, it was Nancy who made it possible for her to travel to and from physical therapy each day until she was, at last, fully recovered and able to return to work.
By the time I met the two women, over a decade had passed. They still worked for the same company, though Nancy was about to retire, and Jackie was now the manager of her own department, a promotion she had earned the year following her life-changing stroke. It was obvious to everyone that the two women were the best of friends. I was a new hire for the company and learned about their history together when they invited me to lunch.
At Nancy's retirement party a couple of weeks later, I was standing next to Jackie as her dear friend was receiving accolades from the rest of her co-workers. Jackie looked at her and then whispered to me, "Can you believe I used to hate that woman? And if it wasn't for her, I'd probably be dead. Goes to show we never know who among us is an angel, doesn't it?"
None of us really knows about the people we decide to hate. We label them wrong and ourselves right and in so doing never realize that we are building a wall of separation that only grows stronger with time. We truly do block the angels from our midst. It is not until circumstance throws us together, as it did Jackie and Nancy, that we realize how very much we need one another and how very alike we truly are.
As a young girl living with my grandmother, any time I criticized another person in her presence, she would ask to see whose shoes I was wearing, a blunt reminder that unless I'd walked in that person's shoes, I had no right to judge. It was also a signal that I should stop talking and start thinking differently.
Even today, I sometimes catch myself looking down at my feet when I feel tempted to criticize. "Who am I to judge?" I'll ask myself in the next breath, realizing as I do that I have no idea what the target of my critical focus is really going through.
Of course, that doesn't always stop me, and sometimes the judgment tumbles into my thoughts or words and takes up residence before I even notice. But through my own self-experimenting, I have noticed that when I succeed in suspending judgment and allowing myself to look at others from another perspective, my joy increases. Judging others, I have discovered, does not let joy in. Stepping away from judgment does.
In the long run, all judging others really does is bring pain and block us from our ability to offer love. We were born to give, to bless, and to be a blessing, but when we are sitting in judgment, we can't. As Mother Teresa pointed out, when we are judging others, we have no time to love them. It is only in suspending judgment that we open our hearts to unconditional love and empower ourselves and each other to be the best that we can be.

New Office Policy
Yes, I'm aware this is old, but I still enjoyed reading it when my office secretary sent it to me.
Dress Code:
1) You are advised to come to work dressed according to your salary.
2) If we see you wearing Prada shoes and carrying a Gucci bag, we will assume you are doing well financially and therefore do not need a raise.
3) If you dress poorly, you need to learn to manage your money better, so that you may buy nicer clothes, and therefore you do not need a raise.
4) If you dress just right, you are right where you need to be and therefore you do not need a raise.
Sick Days:
We will no longer accept a doctor's statement as proof of sickness. If you are able to go to the doctor, you are able to come to work.
Personal Days:
Each employee will receive 104 personal days a year. They are called Saturdays & Sundays.
Bereavement Leave:
This is no excuse for missing work. There is nothing you can do for dead friends, relatives or co-workers. Every effort should be made to have non-employees attend the funeral arrangements in your place. In rare cases where employee involvement is necessary, the funeral should be scheduled in the late afternoon. We will be glad to allow you to work through your lunch hour and subsequently leave one hour early.
Bathroom Breaks:
Entirely too much time is being spent in the toilet. There is now a strict three-minute time limit in the stalls. At the end of three minutes, an alarm will sound, the toilet paper roll will retract, the stall door will open, and a picture will be taken. After your second offense, your picture will be posted on the company bulletin board under the 'Chronic Offenders' category. Anyone caught smiling in the picture will besectioned under the company's mental health policy.
Lunch Break:
* Skinny people get 30 minutes for lunch, as they need to eat more, so that they can look healthy.
* Normal size people get 15 minutes for lunch to get a balanced meal to maintain their average figure.
* Chubby people get 5 minutes for lunch, because that's all the time needed to drink a Slim-Fast.
Thank you for your loyalty to our company. We are here to provide a positive employment experience. Therefore, all questions, comments, concerns, complaints, frustrations, irritations, aggravations, insinuations, allegations, accusations, contemplations, consternation and input should be directed elsewhere.

Dean's List
I just got word that I made the Dean's list this semester... woo-hoo! I'm usually not even eligible since you have to be enrolled in at least 12 credits, which I'm usually not. I'm pretty pleased with myself... of course I nearly didn't find out. I went online to show my grades to D and at the very bottom was the announcement. It wasn't there the day before so I would've never known had I not gone to show him... weird.

Gotta wonder...
This past semester I took an online course which was surprisingly easy. So easy that I was surprised to see the total scores for the class from the teacher in an e-mail today which was;
45 A's or 76.3% of the class
1 A- (1.7%)
1 B+ (1.7%)
3 B ( 5.1%)
2 B-(3.4%)
3 C (5.1%)
1 C- (1.7%)
3 E (5.1%)
How in the heck did those 14 people not get the A when 45 of us did? Seriously, it wasn't hard and there were 2 seperate oppurtunities for 50 bonus points (the total for all assignments was only 450, so 50 points was extremely generous), one of which was time consuming, the other only took me about an hour to complete. I ended up not needing the bonus points though since I got 100's on every assignment by simply following the directions. Also, we had 4 (yes 4) chances on every quiz. Makes it hard to not get 100 on a quiz when you get to take the same one 4 times to ensure you get it. Granted I'm in my last year and have learned to really be on top of stuff like this, but it still makes you wonder how the heck those 14 didn't get A's....

T.V. Free weekend
Another busy weekend down, and let me tell you, we were exhausted this morning from it all!
Friday started off with a bang, quite literally. Along with our nieghbors moving the night before at 10:30 pm, it was a stormy day in Utah so lots of lightening and thunder throughout the day. Luckily the storm subsided long enough friday night for us to go to D's work party, enjoy some great food, and head home to sit in the spa for a little while with some new neighborhood friends.
Sat. was time for a good old family reunion in Fairview. For those who don't know where the heck Fairview is, don't worry, you aren't missing much. We made the drive with our 11 year old niece since her mom was in the process of moving into their new home. We rescued her from the boredom that would've ensued for her and made the nice long drive down. With a few stops along the way (for breakfast, gas and snacks), we were able to make it in perfect timing. After a nice family lunch, homemade rootbeer and fun with the kids, we then sat through each of D's fathers siblings talk. We did learn that there happened to be an ancestor that signed the Mayflower Compact. Very cool to find out that a few ancestors of D's was actually on the Mayflower! We also found out that another ancestor was Martin Luther's brother. Very cool. Anyways, we left the reunion in perfect time as we hit more storms on the way back. D played the wii with our niece when we got home, waiting for the rain to subside so we could go swimming, while I cleaned house and made dinner. Go figure that just as we put on our swimsuits thinking it had cleared up, the clouds decided to roll in and dump as much as they could muster. Since swimming was out of the question, we headed to SIL's new home and helped install a microwave and chat for a little while.
Sunday was a lot of fun. We woke up early to go grocery shopping where we ran into several people I knew years ago. After putting away the groceries and picking up the house, I ditched D for a couple of hours, picked up my new neighborhood friend,J, and headed out to meet up with a really good, very pregnant friend who lives up north. It was her sister-in-laws (who she has custody of) birthday so we met up for lunch and then to go shopping as a group. It was a lot of fun, and while she got lost a couple times, we all survived the trip and her SIL got lots of goodies (I got her some small little things, like nail polish and such from her favorite store). Afterwards, J and I headed to my house to pick up D and her fiance and then walked to a nearby park to play Bocce Ball. For those who have never played.... its lots of fun. D was the only one of the four of us who knew how to play but we still had fun. by the time we got home, we had enough time to grab dinner before we totally crashed for the night. We were both exhausted from our weekend but neither of us could believe that we didn't really sit down and watch TV or anything the entire weekend. Big surprise! Even more so, for a couple who rarely does anything on the weekend, we have big plans again for next weekend! Between my sister coming to town and other previous plans, we'll be busy all over again. Whew!

What is wrong with people?
Less than a month after the portland incident where a car took a biker for a wild ride on the hood of his car, another scary incident for a biker occured here in Utah. Cops: Enraged morotrist swerves into bicyclists, injures one. As gas prices have risen, more and more people have taken the oppurtunity to ride motorcycles and bicycles to and from work and other places. It's a shame to see so many incidents where they have been hit because a car didn't want to share the road with them. Granted, there has been cases where the cyclist was at fault, but when there has been a blatent attempt to hurt someone with a 2 ton car, it is truly a shame. Adding insult to injury, the man tried to claim insurance on his $14k bike and was denied because it was a criminal act and not an accident. I hope he sues the crap out of the guy that did this to him. I'm usually not for suing people, but this guy truly deserves it.
And to all the drivers out there... please be aware of motorcyclist and bicyclist on the roads. They have a right to be there, but they don't have the protection that you have in a car! My husband has been nearly driven off the road several times on his bike because someone was too busy talking on the phone, to their passenger or just in general not paying attention to driving.

A semester for the news...
After a long, hard semester in my senior design class, we summed it all up with a final presentation to our client (the city), professionals engineers of various firms, our professors and various others, like the media. Work by *** engineering class could help backers obtain funding to complete a segment in Salt Lake City's west side
University student engineers spent their summer semester on a plan that Salt Lake City officials say could help get funding to complete a segment of the Jordan River Parkway. Del Cook, a staffer in the city engineer's office, said the Student Engineers Associates' plan, unveiled Friday, could give the project a boost.
"This gives a third party analysis to what we as staff people were projecting," he said. "It is a whole other backup to what we have." Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County and Davis County are applying for grants to get the trail built along the Jordan River from 1700 North to Interstate 215. Cook said the students' feasibility study, which projected it would cost $2.3 million for the best alternative, kick-starts the process. One important aspect of this trail segment is that it would connect with the Legacy Parkway trail system scheduled to be completed this fall, improving bicycle commuting trails into Salt Lake City. According to Professor R, who teaches civil engineering at the University, professors try to give graduating seniors real-life experience by working on a project that can help the community. Past projects have included designs for a trail system near the Brighton ski area, the Olympic Legacy Bridge, the Parleys Trail crossing, and a parking garage at the Utah State Capitol complex. The engineering students broke into teams to study various aspects of the project, from pedestrian and traffic bridges to geotechnical concerns and environmental issues, especially involving wetlands. Scott, manager of the student group, called the project a lot of work, a lot of fun, and occasionally aggravating. "With the level of analysis that went into the project and two trail alternatives well thought out and designed, we were happy to hear city engineers think [the alternatives] are pretty good," he said. Still, University professors, city engineers and other professionals who attended Friday's presentation peppered students with questions about the cost of bridges, concrete as a trail surface, cost overruns, and environmental issues. Students also had to decide how the trail might be best aligned to take advantage of the Legacy Parkway, and a proposed Salt Lake City sports complex, a motocross track and an animal shelter located along the route. The other major portion of the Jordan River Parkway trail not yet finished in Salt Lake City runs from Interstate 80 to North Temple.

No Pain, No Gain
Every year, there is a corporate games that is held for all the businesses in the Salt Lake Valley. Last year, my office couldn't get enough participants so we turned it down. This year, several people were determined to participate so everyone got drug into it one way or another (sometimes kicking and screaming, although certain people still refused... L.B. if you happen to find me, yes I'm talking about your dear hubby!). Anyways, I took the lightest route possible and went for the golfing... and by golfing, I mean mini golf (If you seriously thought I was going to go out and play 18 holes you really don't know me! I like to win....).
Well, little did I know, my boss was to play co-ed tennis last week and after agreeing to go, she opted to take a trip to Jamiaca that was previously planned instead. I can't say I blame her but when you have very few females in your office and another boss who is unwilling to forfeit, it creates a "situation" for others, namely me. So, after not touching a racket for over 5 years, I was forced to shake off the dust bunnies to my rackets and try to figure out how to hit a ball again in 3 days. Yup, 3 days. I was informed last tuesday that I would be taking the big bosses place for Friday nights match. I went out and played with my dad that night and on wednesday night, taking thursday off to rest my achy muscles. While I improved a ton, we still got our butts kicked on friday night... 6-1, 6-1. We put up a fight but to no avail, the other team was simply better than us. I clearly impressed my boss though as I was invited to play in my works foursome that they play in every week. I guess he figured I did descent at least after not a whole lot of warning. I'm hoping that if I start playing again I'll loose some weight. I guess only time will tell...
I play mini golf this week, so we'll see how that one goes... hopefully better than tennis.

Peeking into someone elses life...
Have you ever stumbled onto someones blog that you may or may not have known existed but always thought it would be strange to read... like say a coworkers blog? Well, I did just that this weekend. Both were actually the blogs of 2 coworkers wives... one was blocked, the other wasn't. Funny thing is, the one that was locked I knew about. I didn't know about the other until I saw the last name on a blog and decided to see if it was them. Creates a weird feeling, peeking into the lives of people that you know....
BTW, they both know I saw them. The one that is locked offered to have his wife let me in too... but then again, he went to school with my husband so we'll be forced to see each other at every high school reunion whether we want to or not so may as well make the best of it, right? (kidding, we get along and he has one of the cutest families)

What's that you say???
School is officially out for the semester... yippee! I'm so happy this semester is finally over, even more so that this was my last summer semester EVER. I am now off for 3 weeks which is a well earned break after cramming 16 weeks of school into 12 weeks for 4 classes. It probably wouldn't have been so bad except one of those classes was Senior Design where I was a project manager. Nothing like adding a huge load onto my plate... even worse that I asked to be a PM! Oh well. It was well worth it. I proved to my teacher that I did deserve to take the class despite the fact that I didn't have the pre-req. (I'm taking it next semester since they didn't offer it in the summer or I would've switched the order), I got lots of praise for my hard work, and I was even pulled aside by one of the instructors and told to contact her if I need a letter of recommendation for any reason. Did I mention that the instructor that pulled me aside will be one of my instructors next semester? Not bad.... of course that means she's probably going to really push me next semester! Anyways, I'm going to do nothing but relax this weekend, and I can't wait!
of course I need to make it through tonight first where I will be playing my first tennis match after many years off. I got volunteered but more on that later. For now, I'm going to go lay around for a little while enjoying the freedom of not having homework or class to worry about.
