Random

Ever read someones blog who you don't know and discover a picture of someone that you do know? Yeah, that happened today. Turns out a guy I have a class with is engaged to a local photographer (she hasn't confirmed it but certain information proves it..). Randomness I tell ya!

**Edit** They both confirmed that it is in fact him. Which led to a really strange conversation with the guy, mostly about how I saw his picture on a blog of a person I never met and I basically read things that nobody else in class knows (nothing too weird and definitely not embarrassing but still strange). For instance, I know exactly what kind of flowers he gave her for valentines day, how he proposed, what the ring looks like, and that they recently had an engagement party. A little strange when you consider that we are in a work type environment where I am essentially one of his bosses. Weird, weird, weird.

Roxy the water dog

We decided yesterday to take the day off since my nephews got in town early. So since we had plenty of time and it was a beautiful day, we thought taking them out on a row boat at the lake by our house would be a great idea. The row boats are courtesy of our HOA so it tends to be a fun, free activity. We had got a lifevest for Roxy last year too so she could come with us. Well, we were in the first portion of the lake when Roxy started acting really interested in the water. Before anybody could react, she had jumped in. Keep in mind, this was her first experiance with water other than baths. She immediately started swimming and got about 20 feet from us before we could stop the boats momentum. I called her name because I was panicking that our dog was so far away from us with no way to get to her. No problem though because she immediately turned and swam straight to me so I could pull her back in the boat. I'm glad she had a life vest on, but she is a great swimmer. We're still in shock that she jumped in and looked like she wanted to do it again after she had dried off. I know that D is happy since he really wanted a water pup and that she is!

Award Winning Roses

I came in today, along with all the other women in my office, to a cup full of roses on my desk. A co-worker cut them off of his award winning bushes for all of us. Seriously, they really are award winning. The people who owned his blue house before him (everything is blue, tile, toilets, carpets... literally everything, thus we call it the blue house) won contests and such with them and still come to his house about once a week to check on the bushes and ensure they're taking care of them. Strange, I know. Anyhow, I thought it was really sweet that he did that for everyone... and let me tell you, they are gorgeous roses so at least the old owners clearly knew what they were doing!

One theory I agree with!

I recieved this comment today from Mezmo in regards to my post about the Utahns I hate...

"I've developed a theory in my 20 plus years living in Utah, they drive by divine revelation. That's right they go where "insert your deity here" tells them to, and if "said deity" told THEM when to turn, if you weren't informed you its your own fault and you must repent in order to enjoy safe traffic conditions. :)"

Love it!

Utahns that I hate

I've come to the conclusion that while people make mistakes while driving, many Utahns are just bad drivers because they make mistake after mistak after mistake. These are the drivers I hate. For instance, the gentlemen that nearly hit me after running a stop sign, then failed to yield to a car at the light that had the right of way (he was turning left), and then proceeded to run the red light at the next light. Now that drives me crazy. I swear people like that think that they are more important than everyone else, after all, nothing screams that more than forcing people to wait and holding up traffic so you can go about your way.
On top of that, I hate Utahns that litter and are in general, pigs. Like the car that threw a plastic bottle out the window on the freeway. Or, a perfect example, the lady in the drive thru at Wendy's last night, driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee with expired registration (going on 2 months). First, there is nothing less attractive than people chowing down in there car... in a fast food lane, particularly if its fried chicken. Then, feeding the seagulls? So not cool. I don't think people realize that seagulls are a lot like pigeons... as in, you don't feed them because they don't go away. Besides, its not good for any animal to be fed human food (particularly greasy fried chicken). But besides that, my biggest issue was this womans use of the world as her trash can. Seriously, do people really need to throw their nawed on chicken bones out the window??? Gross! Keep it in your car until you get home... or walk your butt to a trash can! Also, after you light up a cigarette after eating that grease, keep your cigarette in your own car. The world is not your trash can. Further more, either is your body. And the dirty looks she shot me when I couldn't help but stare in shock of her throwing the bones out the window proves that not only does she have no class whatsoever, but that she probably does it quite frequently. Nice. I wonder what her home looks like.

Oh where did the weekend go??

This weekend I took a three day weekend to catch up on school and life in general. Mainly, I took friday off because I had worked 2 late nights and as a result I was falling behind in my classes so I needed a little extra time to catch up (we're talking half a day is all since fridays are half days at my office). Anyways, it was a very productive weekend but it went by way to fast. Here's the run down of it all...
Friday - I woke up, began homework only to realize the drywaller was coming between 1 and 3 to texture where he had patched last week. Looked around the house and realized I needed to clean! I ended up finishing rearranging the rec room (looks much better), vacuumed upstairs, cleaned the entire kitchen, and picked up the main floor. At that point, the house looked presentable and I was feeling quilty for not working on homework so I worked on that in between taking care of some minor cleaning. Discovered we had free Starz on Dish as well so watched movies that night and completed all my homework (go me!).
Sat. - Woke up late and rushed to get across town to help do some survey work for my senior design class. The Mr. came with so it was fun. We had to be back on the south end of the valley at noon so we felt rushed all morning. However, that leads to the fun part of my weekend. We met up with a group of over 30 people to float the Provo River. I had floated the Boise River plenty of times, but never the Provo. It's not something I would recommend doing alone the first time you go since there are parts you need to be aware of, but it is definitely worth the money to go do. We plan to do it again this summer with the same group of people. That took about 2 hours of our day and since we didn't begin it until 2, the rest of the evening was spent relaxing since being in the sun that long and paddeling gets exhausting. I was pleased that the river had better rapids than the Boise River though, they are actually rated on the Provo. Although I missed having the falls like the B.R. Oh well, some gains and some losses. Either way, I'm happy that there is a river to float! The only bad thing of the day was that I got sunburned. Funny thing is, I didn't get burned from the river. Nope, I was protected then. I got sunburned (don't worry, it's not that bad, just a little red not really painful or anything and yes I'm aware that its still not good to get burned), anyways, I got burned from surveying. I thought my neck was covered better but evidently not. Also, the Salt Lake City sun is clearly more powerful then I realized in the morning. I guess I learned my lesson for next time.
Sunday - a day of rest and more cleaning. I did the laundry on Sunday and finished cleaning the main floor. Other than that, I just relaxed and watched a few more movies. We woke up late so yesterday went by a lot faster than I would have liked. Oh well, either way it was a nice weekend.

Still trying to decide where to go for our vacation next year but we have several more months before we want to purchase tickets and everything. I spent like an hour last night looking into more places. Seriously, if you know of anywhere that you personally loved visiting or would like to visit, let me know! That is, if it doesn't cost a fortune to go (i.e. Paris, Fiji, Tahiti, etc.).

Civil Engineers - What people don't know

Going into the civil engineering field is interesting since about half of all the people I come in contact with have no idea what a civil engineer does. Or at least they don't have a full understanding of it. The comment I typically get is, "Oh, you'll be designing road then, right?". Well, that's part of what civil engineers do but there is so much more. People in general have no idea how important civil engineers are to your everyday life. The main emphasis that I'm able to choose from that they teach in school is structural, geotechnical, transportation, environmental, and water resources. There are several others that aren't taught specifically in school but are just as important. I guess my main point in this is that if you don't know what a civil engineer does, you also don't know what would happen without them. PBS recently did a special that you can view here that discusses our water infrastructure. Cities aren't spending enough money in general when it comes to our infrastruture, one that is slowly failing. A coworker sent this to everyone in our office and I think it's something that everyone should watch. Its very informative, a lot of information that we're not even told in school. A book club we have in my office will be reading a book that goes further into this as well which I'm interested to read about. Anyhow, I'm a firm believer that you should learn something everyday, so here's your oppurtunity!

Watch out for that thong!

Something is seriously wrong with our society when a woman feels the need to sue over her thong. As seen here... this woman felt the need to sue Victorias Secret when a metallic piece from her thong flew up and hit her in the eye when trying to put it on. Victorias Secret asked to see the thong but was refused. Makes you wonder if this is anything like the finger in the chili story where the woman lied. I personally would be interested to see the thong just to see how it happened... was it too small for her??? Now we're going to have a "wear at your own risk" on all our underwear.

Cleaning and organizing

This weekend so far has been yet another weekend devoted to cleaning house. The targets this weekend? The garage. Ok, so a few others got hit too but they have been fairly minor so far. I put spice racks on the cabinet doors above our fridge (easier to see certain spices and maximize space a little better), and then I got a hanger for my ironing board that I have already hung in my laundry room. My next spot it going to be our rec room upstairs since it is in desperate need of some rearranging, especially since we took a couch out and put it in the loft instead. While I've been working in the nice cool house, D has been working outside on the garage. Thank goodness we have a 2.5 car garage because we have so much stuff that needs to fit in there. Because of how our driveway is set up, it's difficult to have a car parked in it, therefor everything has to fit. This means that between tools, lawn mower, garbage can, recycle can, etc, we also have to fit 2 cars, a 4-wheeler, and 2 motorcycles (yes, 2, D has a vintage motorcycle from before we met and recently bought an older motorcycle for commuting to help with gas prices since he gets 60 mpg riding that compared to 24 mpg in the car.). Yikes. It does look like it is going to work, but it is a squeeze. We bought heavy duty shelves too that D has made more into a work bench since his stuff gets thrown into a corner and lost. We still need to get hooks to put ladders, bicycles, etc. up on the walls but that will come at a later date. Needless to say, it is only Sat. and we have already had an extremely productive weekend.

My hairs journey begins...

Nothing too exciting here, but since I had requests I thought I'd share. No pictures of my hair that is still attached yet but I was having a hard time taking my own picture so that you could actually see my new haircut. Anyways, the hair doesn't look like much but it is over 10" in length to the longest point of each. The ponytail holder is the 10" mark. They will be sent off tomorrow to locks of love... the journey begins! I should get notice of its safe arrival in about 90 days. I still can't believe I cut off that much. Oh well... it's just hair, that a child will now get to benefit from.

Gas prices

Courtesy of my husband and his friends... very good advice though!

2 years in 1 day...

It's so hard to believe that tomorrow it will have been 2 years since D and I got married. Where did time go??? I feel like we just got married yesterday!

Wanted: Vacation

It's been 2 years since I've had a nice long vacation where I actually got to go somewhere, and now, D and I have began to think about where we want to start planning our next vacation. For next year, that is. As a nice reward for my graduation, we have decided to take a trip shortly afterwards. Thus begins the challenge. Where the heck should we go? We're trying to maintain somewhat of a budget, but it's a pretty descent one too. We originally looked at taking a cruise but after spending a week in Jamaica with everything included for the exact same price as only the cruise (with nothing else), we can't seem to commit to that idea. We want to go somewhere different though, so for now, Cozumel is hitting high on the list. We've heard great things about there, and it's somewhere new for a descent price. Anybody else have any ideas? Oh, and if you happen to know me IRL and want to join us on the trip, give me a call or e-mail me. We think it would be fun to get a bunch of friends together to go somewhere fun. But, if not, we're going either way... now the question is only where.....

High hopes dashed...

I had really high hopes of getting updated on this blog, today, this weekend, this week, month, summer... etc. and it is not happening. I'd apologogize but I've apologized so much for it that its starting to no longer be believable. I will someday get up to date. But for now, I'm too busy with school, organizing the house, cleaning and getting rid of crap I no longer want, and catching up with old friends. Yup, a friend of mine from high school who I danced with contacted me this week. I was thrilled to hear from her, in particular because she lives in the same exact city as another good friend from my other high school (hi Andi!). I'm still wondering if they live close to each other but don't know yet. I do know that she is happily married to her husband of 8 years (wow! But she did get married the summer after high school), and has twin 4 year olds. Crazy. I love hearing from old friends, and I adored this friend. Got me thinking whatever happened to some other friends though... in particular one from my junior year in high school who I was quite close with. In fact, I found out old note notebook that we'd pass to each other on a regular basis just the other day. Brought back a lot of fun memories, but I haven't seen or talked to her since high school. But I guess some friendships are meant to be more than others.... right Andi?
Anyways, you'll be hearing from me probably on tuesday since the hubby and I hit the big 2 years, but don't count on anything before then!
